The statistics for abuse state that around 1 in every 4 women are afflicted with some form of physical or sexual abuse. Unfortunately, what I see in the clinic is much higher, more around 8 out of every 10 women.
That said, screening and inquiring about sexual or physical abuse/trauma is a pivotal question that a pelvic floor physiotherapist should be conversing with you about.
Trauma affects the whole being: body, mind and spirit. These things cannot be treated in isolation otherwise success in symptom alleviation is less likely.
While pelvic floor physiotherapy might not be the first place to start on your healing journey, being open to how your trauma has influenced you pelvic floor is essential.
